Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic principles of ribbon art and its connection to the science of materials. They will create a beautiful ribbon Christmas decoration while learning how different types of ribbons can affect the overall design and structure of their artwork.

Materials and Prep

  • Various types of ribbon (different colors, textures, and widths)
  • Scissors
  • Glue (or tape)
  • Cardboard or a sturdy base for the decoration
  • Markers or paint (optional for additional decoration)

Before the lesson, gather all materials and familiarize yourself with the types of ribbons available. Discuss the properties of each ribbon, such as flexibility, texture, and color vibrancy.

Activities

  • Ribbon Exploration:

Start by examining the different types of ribbons. Discuss their textures, colors, and potential uses in art. Encourage the student to feel the ribbons and describe their thoughts.

  • Design Planning:

Have the student sketch a design for their ribbon decoration on paper. This could be a Christmas tree, wreath, or any festive shape they like. Discuss how different ribbons will be used in their design.

  • Creating the Decoration:

Using the ribbons, scissors, and glue, the student will create their decoration based on their design. Encourage them to experiment with layering and different arrangements of ribbons.

  • Reflection and Display:

Once the decoration is complete, have the student reflect on their process. What did they enjoy? What would they do differently next time? Finally, display their artwork in a special place!

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that ribbons come in many different materials, like satin, grosgrain, and organza? Each type has a unique feel and look!"

  • "Have you ever thought about how art and science can work together? This project combines both!"
  • "As you create, remember that mistakes can lead to new ideas. What can you do differently if something doesn’t go as planned?"
  • "Once your decoration is finished, how can you share it with others? Art is meant to be enjoyed!"
  • "Why do you think we use decorations during holidays? What do they mean to you?"
  • "How can you use this knowledge of ribbons in other art projects in the future?"
  • "Let's think about how this project might inspire you to create something even bigger next time!"
