Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply basic math concepts, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, through engaging activities inspired by Street Fighter. They will learn how to calculate damage points, health points, and even create their own character statistics using math!

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for calculations.
  • A printed character sheet template for creating Street Fighter characters.
  • Basic knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • A timer (optional) for timed challenges.

Activities

  • Character Creation:

The student will create their own Street Fighter character by assigning health points (HP), attack points (AP), and defense points (DP). They will use addition and subtraction to balance these stats, ensuring that the total points do not exceed a set limit (e.g., 100 points).

  • Damage Calculation:

Using their created characters, the student will simulate a battle. They will calculate damage dealt based on attack points and the opponent's defense points. For example, if a character with 20 AP attacks another with 10 DP, how much damage is done?

  • Combo Challenge:

The student will create a series of combos (a sequence of attacks) and calculate the total damage over a series of turns. For instance, if a combo consists of three attacks of 15, 10, and 5 damage, what is the total damage?

  • Health Point Tracking:

During the simulated battle, the student will keep track of each character's health points as damage is dealt. They will practice subtraction to see how many HP remain after each round of attacks.

Talking Points

  • "Let's start by creating your own Street Fighter character! How many health points do you want them to have?"
  • "When your character attacks, remember to subtract the damage from the opponent's health points. What happens if their HP goes to zero?"
  • "Combos are fun! How do you think we can add up the damage from multiple attacks?"
  • "Math is everywhere, even in video games! Can you think of other ways math is used in Street Fighter?"
  • "Great job keeping track of health points! How do you feel about using subtraction to see how much health is left?"
