Objective

By the end of this lesson, Lennan will understand the basics of money management, including how to use a bank account, the importance of budgeting, tracking expenses, and the differences between debit and credit cards. Lennan will also learn about online banking and bank fees, setting a solid foundation for financial literacy.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Access to a computer or tablet for online banking exploration
  • Sample budget template (can be created in a document or on paper)
  • Examples of bank statements (can be fictional or simplified)
  • Access to a calculator for budgeting exercises

Before the lesson, it would be helpful to familiarize yourself with any online banking platforms you might want to explore together. Make sure to know the basics of how to navigate them.

Activities

  1. Bank Account Basics:

Start with a discussion about what a bank account is and why it's important. Lennan can create a mock bank account on paper, detailing deposits, withdrawals, and balances.

  2. Online Banking Exploration:

Spend some time exploring a mock online banking site. Show Lennan how to check balances, view transactions, and understand bank statements.

  3. Budgeting Game:

Create a fun budgeting game where Lennan has a set amount of money to "spend" on different categories (food, entertainment, savings). Use the sample budget template to track spending.

  4. Tracking Spending Exercise:

Have Lennan track hypothetical spending for a week. Discuss how tracking helps in staying within a budget and making informed financial decisions.

  5. Debit vs. Credit Discussion:

Engage in a discussion about debit and credit cards, their uses, and the importance of understanding bank fees. Lennan can make a chart comparing the two.
