Objective

By the end of this lesson plan, Emily will understand the importance of nutrition, how to read food labels, the concept of a well-balanced plate according to the new FDA dietary guidelines, and how to create a recipe and prepare a meal. This will empower her to make healthier food choices and develop her cooking skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Cooking utensils (knives, cutting board, pots, pans)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Ingredients for a simple recipe (vegetables, proteins, grains)
  • Access to food labels (packaged food items)
  • Printed copies of the new FDA dietary guidelines
  • Notebook and pen for notes and recipe creation
  • Access to a kitchen with basic cooking appliances

Before starting, ensure all ingredients are fresh and that Emily is familiar with basic cooking techniques like chopping and boiling.

Activities

  • Label Reading Challenge:

Emily will choose three different packaged food items from the pantry and analyze their nutrition labels. She will note down key information such as calories, serving size, and nutrients to understand what they mean.

  • Building a Balanced Plate:

Using the printed FDA dietary guidelines, Emily will create a visual representation of a balanced plate using cut-out pictures from magazines or drawings. She will categorize foods into fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and dairy.

  • Recipe Creation and Cooking:

Emily will brainstorm a simple recipe that incorporates a variety of food groups. She will write down the steps and then prepare the meal, applying what she learned about nutrition and balanced eating.

Talking Points

  • "Why do you think reading labels is important? It helps us understand what we are eating and make healthier choices!"
  • "What do you notice about the serving sizes on labels? Sometimes they can be surprising, right?"
  • "Can you name the five food groups? Remember, a balanced plate includes all of them!"
  • "What’s your favorite healthy food? Let’s think about how we can include it in our meals!"
  • "How does cooking at home help you control what goes into your meals? You can choose fresh ingredients and avoid unhealthy additives!"
