Objective
By the end of this lesson, Gentry will understand the concept of the number 10 using unifix cubes. Gentry will learn how to build the number 10, explore different ways to combine cubes to make 10, and recognize that 10 is a complete set of ten items.
Materials and Prep
- Unifix cubes (at least 20 cubes in total)
Before the lesson, ensure that Gentry has a clean workspace to build with the unifix cubes. Familiarize yourself with how to connect and disconnect the cubes so that Gentry can easily manipulate them during the activities.
Activities
- Build the Number 10: Gentry will use 10 unifix cubes to build a tower. Encourage Gentry to count each cube as they stack them, reinforcing the concept of the number 10.
- Make Different Combinations: Challenge Gentry to find different ways to combine cubes to make 10. For example, using 5 red cubes and 5 blue cubes or 2 green cubes and 8 yellow cubes. This will help Gentry understand addition in a fun way.
- Number Stories: Ask Gentry to create a simple story about 10 using the cubes. For instance, “There are 10 apples in a basket. If I take away 3, how many are left?” This integrates storytelling with math.
Talking Points
- "Look at these cubes! Let’s count them together. How many do we need to make 10?"
- "Great job! Now, can you show me another way to make 10 with different colors?"
- "If I have 10 cubes and I take away 4, how many do I have left? Let’s count them!"
- "Can you think of a fun story that involves 10? Let’s build it with our cubes!"
- "Wow! You made a tower of 10! What would happen if we added 2 more cubes?"
- "Remember, 10 is a special number! It’s like a team of 10 cubes working together!"
