Objective

By the end of this lesson, Asher will understand the basic concepts of simple machines and how they help us in everyday life. He will also engage in hands-on activities that enhance his fine motor skills and creativity.

Materials and Prep

  • Cardboard boxes
  • Plastic bottle caps
  • Straws
  • Rubber bands
  • Scissors (with supervision)
  • Markers or crayons
  • Glue
  • Small toys (like action figures or cars)

Before the lesson, ensure that all materials are safe and accessible. Prepare a space where Asher can work freely without distractions.

Activities

  • Building a Simple Lever:

Using a cardboard box and a plastic bottle cap, Asher will create a lever. He can place a small toy on one end and push down on the other end to see how it lifts the toy. This will help him understand how levers work.

  • Creating a Pulley System:

Using straws and rubber bands, Asher will make a simple pulley system. He can attach a toy to one end and pull it up using the rubber bands. This activity will illustrate how pulleys make lifting easier.

  • Designing a Catapult:

Asher will use rubber bands and a cardboard box to build a simple catapult. He can launch small toys and measure how far they go, introducing concepts of force and motion.

  • Coloring and Drawing:

After the hands-on activities, Asher will take some time to draw his favorite simple machine and color it. This will help him express his creativity and reinforce what he learned.

Talking Points

  • "Do you know what a lever is? It's something that helps us lift heavy things easily!"
  • "Look at how the pulley works! When we pull down on one side, what happens to the toy on the other side?"
  • "Can you guess how far the toy will fly when we use the catapult? Let's find out together!"
  • "What colors do you want to use to make your simple machine look cool?"
  • "Why do you think we use simple machines? They help us do things faster and easier!"
