Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply basic arithmetic skills while playing the game Uno.
Materials and Prep
- Uno cards
- Pen or pencil
- Blank paper
Before starting the lesson, make sure you are familiar with the rules of Uno.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Addition and Subtraction
Play a game of Uno with the regular rules. However, each time you play a card, you must solve a simple addition or subtraction problem before playing the card. For example, if you play a "7" card, you can say "7 minus 3 equals?" and the answer would be "4" before you can place the card on the pile.
-
Activity 2: Multiplication and Division
In this game, you will use multiplication and division. Each time you play a card, you must solve a multiplication or division problem. For example, if you play a "3" card, you can say "3 times 5 equals?" and the answer would be "15" before you can place the card on the pile.
-
Activity 3: Word Problems
For this activity, create word problems related to Uno cards. For example, "If you have 4 red cards and you draw 2 more, how many red cards do you have in total?" or "If you have 12 cards in your hand and you need to give away 3, how many cards will you have left?" Solve these word problems together while playing the game.
