Let's Play Math with Uno!

Hi! Did you know your favorite game, Uno, is full of numbers? We can use those colorful cards to practice our math skills and have fun at the same time! Today, we'll use Uno cards to practice adding, subtracting, and comparing numbers.

Activity 1: Uno Addition War

This is like the card game War, but with adding!

  1. Deal the number cards (0-9) evenly between two players (you and me!). Keep your cards in a pile face down.
  2. Both players flip over their top two cards.
  3. Add the numbers on your two cards together.
  4. Say your sum out loud. The player with the higher sum wins all four cards and puts them at the bottom of their pile.
  5. If the sums are the same (it's a tie!), each player places three cards face down and then flips a fourth card. Add the value of the *original two cards* plus this *new fourth card*. The player with the higher sum wins all the cards from that round.
  6. Keep playing until one player runs out of cards, or for a set amount of time. The player with the most cards wins!

Example: You flip a Red 7 and a Blue 5. Your sum is 7 + 5 = 12. I flip a Green 8 and a Yellow 3. My sum is 8 + 3 = 11. Your sum (12) is higher than mine (11), so you win all four cards!

Activity 2: Uno Subtraction Challenge

Let's practice taking away!

  1. Use the number cards (0-9). Place the deck face down.
  2. Flip over two cards from the top of the deck.
  3. Look at the two numbers. Subtract the smaller number from the larger number.
  4. Write down the subtraction sentence (like 9 - 2 = 7) on your paper.
  5. Do this 10 times, creating 10 different subtraction problems!

Example: You flip over a Yellow 8 and a Red 3. The larger number is 8, the smaller is 3. Subtract: 8 - 3 = 5. Write down "8 - 3 = 5".

Activity 3: Greater Than, Less Than Uno

Who has the bigger number?

  1. Deal the number cards (0-9) evenly between two players, face down.
  2. Both players flip over their top card at the same time.
  3. Compare the two numbers. The player with the higher number says "Mine is greater!" and takes both cards, placing them at the bottom of their pile.
  4. If the numbers are the same, it's a tie! Leave those cards and flip the next card. The winner of the next flip takes all the cards (the tied cards and the new cards).
  5. Play until one player has all the cards, or for a set time.

Have fun playing with numbers! Remember, math can be a game!
