Objective

By the end of this lesson, Gatlin will learn how to make a simple and fun snack using safe cooking techniques. He will understand the importance of measuring ingredients and following steps to create a delicious treat!

Materials and Prep

  • 1 banana
  • 2 tablespoons of peanut butter (or any nut butter)
  • 1 tablespoon of honey (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon of chocolate chips (optional)
  • A plate for serving
  • A butter knife (for spreading)
  • A cutting board (for cutting the banana)

Before starting, make sure to wash your hands and the banana. Discuss with Gatlin any allergies he might have to the ingredients.

Activities

  • Washing Hands:

Start by washing hands together. Talk about why washing hands is important before cooking. It keeps our food clean!

  • Cutting the Banana:

Use the butter knife to cut the banana into small slices. Encourage Gatlin to count the slices as he cuts them.

  • Spreading Peanut Butter:

Show Gatlin how to spread peanut butter on the banana slices. Let him practice spreading with the butter knife.

  • Adding Toppings:

If desired, drizzle honey on top and sprinkle chocolate chips. Discuss how toppings can change the flavor!

  • Tasting Time:

Finally, enjoy the snack together! Talk about how it tastes and what he likes best about it.

  • "Why do we wash our hands before cooking? It keeps our food clean and safe!"
  • "Can you count how many banana slices we have? Let's count together!"
