Objective

By the end of this lesson, RR will understand the basics of statistics, including how to collect data, organize it, and make simple conclusions based on that data. RR will also learn how to create a simple bar graph to visually represent the data collected.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for note-taking and calculations.
  • Colored pencils or crayons for drawing graphs.
  • A timer or stopwatch (can be a phone or any timer available).
  • Knowledge of basic counting and simple addition.

Activities

  • Data Collection: Favorite Snacks Survey

    RR will conduct a mini-survey among family members or friends to find out their favorite snacks. RR will ask each person and record their answers on paper. This will help him learn how to collect data directly from people.

  • Data Organization: Tally Marks

    After collecting the data, RR will use tally marks to organize the responses. This will help him visualize the number of people who like each snack. Tally marks are a fun and quick way to count!

  • Creating a Bar Graph

    Using the tally marks, RR will create a simple bar graph on paper. He will draw bars for each snack based on how many people like it. This will help him see which snack is the most popular at a glance!

  • Discussion: What Does the Data Tell Us?

    RR will discuss the results of his survey and graph with a family member. Together, they will look at the graph and talk about which snacks are the most and least liked, helping RR practice making conclusions based on data.
