Objective

By the end of this lesson, Gatlin will be able to identify different types of bugs, understand their habitats, and learn about their roles in nature. He will also develop a sense of curiosity and appreciation for the tiny creatures that share our world.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • A container or jar (for observing bugs, if found)
  • A magnifying glass (if available, or just use eyes!)
  • Access to a garden, park, or outdoor area

Before the lesson, make sure to choose a safe outdoor area where Gatlin can explore and observe bugs. Explain to him the importance of being gentle with living creatures.

Activities

  • Bug Hunt: Take Gatlin outside to search for bugs. Encourage him to look under leaves, rocks, and in the grass. If he finds any bugs, let him observe them closely using the magnifying glass.

  • Bug Art: After the bug hunt, have Gatlin draw his favorite bug that he found. He can use crayons or colored pencils to create a colorful picture of the bug, including details like its colors and patterns.

  • Bug Facts Storytime: Gather together and read a short story or make up a fun story about a bug's adventure. You can include facts about what bugs eat and where they live in the story.

  • Bug Dance: Create a fun dance that mimics how different bugs move. For example, Gatlin can hop like a grasshopper or wiggle like a worm. This will help him remember the bugs and have fun at the same time!

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that bugs are everywhere? They live in the grass, in trees, and even in our homes!"
  • "Bugs help our plants grow! Some bugs, like bees, help flowers make seeds."
  • "What do you think a bug feels like? Let’s be gentle and feel how soft or bumpy they are!"
  • "Some bugs can fly, and some can’t. Can you think of a bug that flies? How about one that crawls?"
  • "Every bug is important! Even the tiny ones help keep our world healthy!"
