Objective
By the end of this lesson, RR will be able to identify different materials and understand how they can be combined in various ways to create new objects or solutions. RR will have fun exploring the properties of these materials through hands-on activities!
Materials and Prep
- Paper (various types: construction paper, regular printer paper, etc.)
- Scissors
- Tape or glue
- String or yarn
- Markers or crayons
- Plastic or paper cups
- Small rocks or pebbles
- Water
- A container (like a bowl) for mixing materials
Before the lesson, make sure all materials are accessible and safe to use. Explain to RR the importance of being careful with scissors and glue.
Activities
-
Material Exploration:
RR will gather different types of paper and explore their textures and colors. Then, RR will think about how they can combine different papers to create a collage. This will help RR understand how materials can be mixed.
-
Building Structures:
Using cups, string, and paper, RR will try to build a tower. RR can experiment with different combinations of materials to see which ones are the strongest and most stable.
-
Water Mixing Experiment:
RR will use the container to mix small rocks or pebbles with water. RR will observe how the materials interact and discuss what happens when they are combined.
-
Creative Drawing:
RR will draw a picture of a new invention that uses at least three different materials. RR can label the materials and explain how they work together in their invention.
Talking Points
- "What do you think will happen if we mix these two materials together?"
- "Can you tell me about the different properties of the materials we're using? How do they feel?"
- "Why do you think some materials work better together than others? Let's find out!"
- "How can we use what we've learned today to make something new? What would you create?"
- "What did you notice when we mixed the rocks with water? Did anything change?"
- "If you could invent something using these materials, what would it be? Why?"
- "How did your tower change when you used different materials? Which combination was the best?"
- "What was your favorite part of today's activities? Why did you enjoy it?"
