Objective

By the end of this lesson, Ted will have a better understanding of skateboarding techniques, safety measures, and the importance of practice. He will learn basic tricks and improve his confidence on the skateboard.

Materials and Prep

  • Skateboard
  • Helmet
  • Protective pads (knee and elbow pads)
  • Open space or skate park
  • Water bottle for hydration

Before the lesson, ensure Ted knows the importance of wearing safety gear and being aware of his surroundings while skating. Familiarize him with basic skateboarding terminology, such as "ollie," "kickflip," and "grind."

Activities

  • Warm-Up Session

Start with a 10-minute warm-up to stretch out muscles and prepare for skating. This can include simple exercises like jumping jacks, arm circles, and leg stretches.

  • Basic Riding Practice

Spend some time practicing balance and riding on the skateboard. Ted can push off with one foot and practice gliding, stopping, and turning. This helps build confidence and control on the board.

  • Learning Tricks

Introduce Ted to a simple trick, such as the ollie. Break down the steps: pop the tail of the board, slide the front foot up, and jump. Encourage him to practice until he feels comfortable.

  • Obstacle Course

Create a mini obstacle course using cones or other items. Ted can practice weaving in and out, stopping, and performing tricks at different points in the course. This adds a fun challenge to the lesson!

  • Cool Down and Reflection

End the lesson with a cool-down period, where Ted can stretch and reflect on what he learned. Ask him how he felt about the tricks and riding, and what he wants to practice next time.
