Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to successfully bake a simple batch of cookies from scratch, understand the ingredients involved, and learn how to follow a recipe step-by-step. The student will also gain confidence in their baking skills and enjoy a delicious treat they made themselves!
Materials and Prep
- 1 cup of butter (softened)
- 1 cup of sugar
- 1 cup of brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
- 3 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon of baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 2 cups of chocolate chips (or any other add-ins like nuts or dried fruit)
- Mixing bowls
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Baking sheet
- Oven
Before starting, ensure the oven is preheated to 350°F (175°C) and that all ingredients are at room temperature for best results.
Activities
-
Ingredient Shopping:
Take a trip to the grocery store to gather all the ingredients listed above. This is a great opportunity to learn about measuring and selecting fresh ingredients. Discuss why each ingredient is important for baking cookies.
-
Measuring and Mixing:
Once back home, measure out each ingredient carefully. Talk about the importance of accuracy in baking. Then, mix the ingredients together in the correct order, explaining the role of each ingredient as you go (e.g., butter for richness, sugar for sweetness).
-
Baking Time:
Place the cookie dough on the baking sheet and put it in the oven. Set a timer and discuss what happens during baking, like how the heat transforms the dough into cookies. This is a great time to learn about kitchen safety, especially when handling the oven.
-
Taste Test:
Once the cookies are baked and cooled, it’s time for a taste test! Discuss the flavors and textures of the cookies, and encourage the student to think of ways to modify the recipe for next time (like adding different flavors or toppings).
Talking Points
- "Did you know that baking is a science? Each ingredient has a specific role in the recipe!"
- "Why do you think we need to preheat the oven? It helps the cookies bake evenly!"
- "What do you think will happen if we forget to add the baking soda? The cookies might not rise!"
- "How do you think the texture of the cookies will change if we bake them for too long?"
- "Can you think of any different flavors we could try in our cookies next time?"
- "What was your favorite part of the baking process? Was it measuring, mixing, or tasting?"
