Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic concept of fractions, including halves and quarters, and how to identify and create them using everyday objects.

Materials and Prep

  • No special materials are required for this lesson.
  • Be prepared to use your hands and imagination!
  • Know the difference between whole, half, and quarter.

Activities

  • Fraction Pizza: Pretend to make a pizza using your hands. Show how to split it into two equal parts (halves) and then into four equal parts (quarters). This will help visualize fractions in a fun way!

  • Fraction Art: Draw a circle and divide it into different sections. Color one half and one quarter in different colors. This will help the student see how fractions look visually.

  • Fraction Storytime: Create a short story about a character who has a pizza. The character shares the pizza with friends, and you can discuss how many pieces they get. This will reinforce the concept of sharing and fractions.

Talking Points

  • "What is a fraction? It's a way to show parts of a whole!"
  • "If we have a pizza and we cut it in half, how many pieces do we have? That's right, two pieces!"
  • "When we cut the pizza into four equal parts, each piece is called a quarter!"
  • "Can you show me how to split your drawing into halves and quarters? Let's count them together!"
  • "Why do we use fractions? They help us share things equally, like pizza or toys!"
  • "Can you think of other things we can split into fractions? What about a cake or a chocolate bar?"
