Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic concept of fractions, be able to identify and create simple fractions using everyday objects, and solve basic fraction problems.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Some small snacks (like fruit or crackers) to share
- Optional: Colored markers or crayons
Before the lesson, make sure to prepare some snacks that can be easily divided, like a fruit that can be cut into pieces or crackers that can be broken. This will help illustrate fractions in a fun way!
Activities
-
Fraction Fun with Snacks: Start by taking a snack (like an apple) and show how to cut it into halves and quarters. Let the student do the cutting with guidance. Discuss how many pieces they have and what each piece represents in terms of fractions.
-
Paper Fractions: Give the student a piece of paper and ask them to fold it in half, then in quarters. After they unfold it, discuss how many parts are there and what each part represents. They can even color each section differently!
-
Fraction Matching Game: Create simple fraction cards (like 1/2, 1/4, and 1/3) and ask the student to match them with the corresponding number of pieces of snacks or paper they created earlier.
Talking Points
- "Look at this apple! If I cut it in half, how many pieces do we have? That’s right, we have 2 pieces! Each piece is called a half."
- "When we cut something into 4 pieces, each piece is called a quarter. Can you show me how to fold this paper into quarters?"
- "If I eat one piece of our 4-piece snack, how many pieces do we have left? That’s right! We have 3 pieces left. So we can say I ate 1 out of 4 pieces."
- "Fractions are just a way to show parts of a whole. Can you think of something else we can cut or share to make fractions?"
- "When we use fractions, we use numbers on the top and bottom. The top number tells us how many pieces we have, and the bottom number tells us how many pieces the whole is divided into!"
- "Great job today! Remember, fractions are everywhere, especially when we share snacks with our friends!"
