Objective

By the end of this lesson, Emily will have learned how to create a beautiful Box Chain Weave bracelet. She will understand the basic techniques involved in the weaving process and will have the opportunity to express her creativity through color selection and design.

Materials and Prep

  • Jump rings (approximately 100 pieces)
  • Two pairs of pliers (preferably flat-nose and round-nose)
  • A clasp (lobster or toggle clasp)
  • Colorful aluminum or stainless steel rings (optional for design)
  • Workspace (a flat surface to work on)
  • A towel or mat (to prevent rings from rolling away)

Before starting, ensure that the workspace is clean and organized. Familiarize Emily with the types of jump rings and pliers, and demonstrate how to open and close the rings safely.

Activities

  • Introduction to Chain Weaving: Begin with a brief overview of chain weaving and its history. Discuss how different cultures have used chain weaving in jewelry making.
  • Demonstration: Show Emily how to open and close jump rings correctly. Then, demonstrate the Box Chain Weave technique step by step, explaining each movement.
  • Creative Design: Allow Emily to choose her jump ring colors and plan her bracelet design. Encourage her to think about patterns and color combinations.
  • Hands-On Bracelet Making: Guide Emily as she begins to create her bracelet, offering tips and support as needed. Let her work independently to develop her skills.
  • Show and Tell: Once the bracelet is complete, have Emily present her creation. Discuss what she enjoyed about the process and what she learned.
