Objective

By the end of this lesson, RR will understand the basic concept of money, how it is used in everyday life, and the importance of saving. RR will also learn how to make simple calculations with money through fun activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper (for notes and drawings)
  • Pencil or crayon (for writing and coloring)
  • Play money (if available, or draw some on paper)
  • Calculator (optional, for checking math)

Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with basic money concepts such as coins, bills, and their values. Prepare some simple math problems related to money that RR can solve.

Activities

  • Money Match Game: Create a matching game where RR matches pictures of coins and bills with their values. For example, a picture of a quarter matches with 25 cents. This will help RR recognize different types of money and their values.

  • Shopping Spree: Set up a pretend store using items around the house (like toys or snacks). Assign prices to each item and give RR some play money. Let RR "shop" for items while practicing addition and subtraction to stay within budget.

  • Save or Spend: Discuss different items RR might want to buy. Create a list of things RR wants and their prices. Talk about the importance of saving money for bigger items and help RR create a simple savings plan.

Talking Points

  • "What is money? Money is what we use to buy things we want or need!"
  • "Do you know what coins and bills are? Coins are round and made of metal, and bills are flat and made of paper!"
  • "Why do we need to save money? Saving helps us buy bigger things later, like a new toy or a game!"
  • "When we shop, we need to know how much money we have. Can you add up the prices of the items you want?"
  • "What happens if we spend all our money? We won’t be able to buy anything else until we save more!"
  • "Let’s pretend to be shopkeepers! What price would you put on your favorite toy?"
  • "How do you feel when you save money? It feels great to save for something special!"
  • "Can you think of something you want to save for? Let’s make a plan together!"
