Objective
By the end of this lesson, Bradley will be able to understand basic math concepts such as counting, addition, and geometry through the exciting lens of building houses in MineCraft. He will apply these concepts to design and create his own virtual house, enhancing both his math skills and creativity.
Materials and Prep
- Access to MineCraft
- Paper and pencil for notes and sketches
- Calculator (optional for addition)
- Basic understanding of shapes (square, rectangle, etc.)
Activities
- Counting Blocks:
Start by counting the different types of blocks available in MineCraft. Bradley can choose a few types of blocks to use for his house and count how many of each he wants to use.
- Building Shapes:
Discuss the shapes that make up a house. Bradley can draw a simple house on paper and label the shapes (like squares for walls and triangles for the roof). Then, he can replicate those shapes in MineCraft.
- Addition Challenge:
As Bradley builds, ask him how many blocks he has used in total. For example, if he uses 10 blocks for the walls and 5 for the roof, help him add those numbers together to find out how many blocks he has used overall.
- Design a Dream House:
Let Bradley design his dream house in MineCraft. He can decide how many rooms it will have and what shapes they will be. Encourage him to think about how he can use math to make it the right size!
Talking Points
- "How many different blocks do you see? Let's count them together!"
- "Can you tell me what shapes make up your house? What shape is the roof?"
- "If you use 10 blocks for the walls and 5 for the roof, how many blocks do you have in total? Let's add them!"
- "What rooms do you want in your dream house? How can we use shapes to make them?"
- "Why do you think it's important to count the blocks? What happens if we forget some?"
- "Can you think of other things we can build using shapes and numbers? Maybe a castle or a park?"
