Objective
By the end of this lesson, RR will understand the basics of technology, how it affects our daily lives, and will create a simple technology project using everyday ideas.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil and paper
- Access to a computer or tablet (if available)
- Household items for building (like cardboard, plastic bottles, etc.)
- Timer (for time management during activities)
Before the lesson, ensure RR has a comfortable space to work and that all materials are easily accessible. It's also helpful to have an idea of what kinds of technology RR is interested in, such as computers, robots, or simple machines.
Activities
- Technology Brainstorm: Start by discussing what technology means. RR can list different types of technology they see every day, like phones, computers, and even toys. Encourage them to think about how these items help people.
- Build a Simple Machine: Using household items, RR can create a simple machine, like a lever or a pulley. This hands-on activity will help them understand how technology can make work easier.
- Design a Tech Invention: RR can draw a picture of an invention that could make life easier or more fun. They should think about what problem their invention solves and how it works.
- Technology Show and Tell: If RR has any favorite gadgets or toys, they can share them and explain how they work. This encourages communication skills and reinforces their understanding of technology.
Talking Points
- "What do you think technology is? Can you name some examples of technology you see every day?"
- "How does technology help us? For example, how does your tablet help you learn?"
- "Let’s think about simple machines. Do you know what a lever is? Can you think of something around the house that works like a lever?"
- "What problem would you like to solve with your invention? How could your invention help someone?"
- "Why is it important to talk about technology? How does it change the way we live?"
- "Can you think of a time when technology made something easier for you? Share your story!"
- "What do you think will be the next big technology invention? Why do you think it will be important?"
- "How do you feel when you use technology? Does it make you excited, curious, or something else?"
