Objective
By the end of this lesson, RR will understand basic concepts of technology, including how simple machines work and their applications in everyday life. RR will also have fun experimenting with creating a simple machine using household items.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil or pen
- Scissors
- Tape or glue
- String or yarn
- Any small household items (like bottle caps, cardboard, etc.)
Before the lesson, it’s helpful to review what simple machines are and think about how they are used in daily life. It's also good to have a space for crafting and experimenting with the items listed above.
Activities
-
Simple Machines Exploration:
RR will learn about the six types of simple machines: lever, pulley, wheel and axle, inclined plane, screw, and wedge. We will discuss examples of each and how they help us in everyday tasks.
-
Build a Simple Machine:
Using the materials provided, RR will create a simple machine. For example, a lever using a pencil and a bottle cap as a fulcrum. This hands-on activity will help RR understand how these machines work.
-
Technology in Action:
RR will think of a task that is hard to do and brainstorm how a simple machine could make it easier. RR can draw or write about their ideas and share them at the end of the lesson.
Talking Points
- "What do you think a simple machine is? It's something that helps us do work easier!"
- "Can you name the six types of simple machines? They are lever, pulley, wheel and axle, inclined plane, screw, and wedge!"
- "Let’s look at how a lever works. When you push down on one side, what happens to the other side?"
- "Why do you think we use simple machines? They help us lift heavy things or move them with less effort!"
- "What kind of simple machine can you create with these materials? Let’s get creative!"
- "Think about a task you find difficult. How could a simple machine help you with that?"
- "How do you think technology has changed the way we use simple machines today?"
- "Great job today! What was your favorite part of learning about simple machines?"
