Objective

By the end of this lesson, RR will understand the basic concepts of how colors mix and create new colors through hands-on activities, combining their love for art and science.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper (any type)
  • Water (for mixing)
  • Food coloring or washable markers (in primary colors: red, blue, yellow)
  • Paintbrush or cotton swabs (for applying colors)
  • Containers (like cups or bowls, for mixing colors)

Before the lesson, make sure to gather all the materials and prepare a space where RR can get a little messy while creating art!

Activities

  • Color Mixing Experiment:

RR can use the primary colors (red, blue, yellow) to mix and create secondary colors (green, orange, purple). Using the containers, RR will mix different combinations of food coloring or markers with water to see what new colors they can create!

  • Color Wheel Creation:

Using the colors they mixed, RR can draw a color wheel on paper. This will help them visualize how colors relate to each other. They can also label the primary and secondary colors.

  • Art Project:

RR can create a piece of art using the new colors they've made. They can paint, draw, or use their fingers to make fun designs, showcasing their understanding of color mixing!

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that when we mix colors, we can create new ones? It's like magic!"
  • "What happens when we mix red and blue? Let's find out together!"
  • "Primary colors are super special because they can't be made by mixing other colors. Can you name them?"
  • "The colors we create by mixing primary colors are called secondary colors. Can you guess what they are?"
  • "Creating a color wheel helps us see how colors are connected. Why do you think that's important?"
  • "Art is a fantastic way to explore science! How do you feel when you mix colors?"
  • "Every time you mix colors, you are being a scientist and an artist at the same time!"
  • "What was your favorite color you made today? Why do you like it?"
