Objective
By the end of this lesson, RR will understand the basic concepts of technology, including how it impacts our daily lives, and will create a simple project that showcases their understanding of technology.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil or colored markers
- Access to a computer or tablet (optional for research)
- Craft materials (like scissors and glue, if available)
Before the lesson, make sure to have a quiet space where RR can focus on the activities. It would be helpful to have access to the internet for some research activities, but it’s not necessary.
Activities
-
Technology Treasure Hunt
RR will look around the house to find different pieces of technology, such as a smartphone, a tablet, or a computer. They will make a list of items they find and describe what each one does.
-
Draw Your Favorite Gadget
RR will choose their favorite piece of technology and draw it on paper. They will label the parts and write a few sentences about why they like it.
-
Simple Coding Game
If access to a computer or tablet is available, RR can play a simple coding game online, like Scratch or Code.org, where they can create their own animated story or game.
-
Invent a New Gadget
RR will brainstorm and draw a new gadget they wish existed. They can think about what it would do and how it would help people in their daily lives.
Talking Points
- "What do you think technology is? It's anything that helps us do things easier or faster!"
- "Can you name some types of technology you use every day? Like your tablet, TV, or even a toaster!"
- "Why do you think technology is important? It helps us connect, learn, and have fun!"
- "How do you think technology has changed over the years? Think about how phones used to look compared to now!"
- "What is your favorite gadget, and what do you like about it? Is it because it's fun or helpful?"
- "If you could invent any gadget, what would it be? Let's think about how it would work!"
- "Did you know that coding is like giving instructions to a computer? It’s like telling it what to do!"
- "How can technology help us solve problems? For example, how does a smartphone help us communicate?"
