Objective
By the end of this lesson, Robin will explore how different water temperatures and colors affect freezing time. We will learn about color combinations and observe the results of our experiments in a fun and engaging way!
Materials and Prep
- Big trays of water
- Food coloring (various colors)
- Freezer
- Measuring cup (optional for water)
- Timer or clock (to time how long it takes to freeze)
Before the lesson, make sure the freezer is empty and ready to hold the trays. Discuss with Robin which colors they want to use and how many trays to prepare.
Activities
-
Color Mixing Fun
Start by adding different food coloring to separate trays of water. Talk about what happens when you mix colors together. For example, what do you think will happen if we mix red and blue?
-
Temperature Experiment
Prepare trays with hot water, cold water, and room temperature water. Discuss with Robin which one they think will freeze the fastest and why. Then, place them in the freezer and start timing!
-
Observation Time
Check the trays after a set amount of time to see which one is starting to freeze. Encourage Robin to note the differences in color and texture as the water freezes.
-
Art with Ice
Once the water is frozen, take the ice out of the trays and let Robin create art with the colorful ice cubes. They can use them to make patterns or even have a little ice sculpture party!
Talking Points
- "What colors do you think will mix together? Let’s find out!"
- "Do you think hot water or cold water will freeze faster? Why do you think that?"
- "Look at how the colors change when we mix them! Isn’t that cool?"
- "Let’s watch the ice freeze. What do you think will happen first?"
- "Now that we have our colorful ice, what fun things can we create with them?"
