Objective
By the end of this lesson, Robin will learn about color mixing and the different freezing rates of water by experimenting with food coloring and various water temperatures. Robin will also develop observation skills and engage in creative play with colors.
Materials and Prep
- Food coloring (various colors)
- Large trays of water
- Hot water (from the tap, with adult supervision)
- Cold water (from the fridge)
- Clear water (tap water)
- Colored water (using food coloring)
Before the lesson, prepare the trays with different types of water: some with hot water, some with cold, some clear, and some colored. Make sure to have enough space in the freezer for the trays.
Activities
-
Color Mixing Fun:
Start by adding different food coloring to the trays of water. Let Robin experiment with mixing colors to see what new colors can be created. Ask questions like, "What happens when we mix red and blue?"
-
Freezing Experiment:
Place the trays in the freezer and set a timer. Discuss which trays have hot, cold, clear, and colored water. Ask Robin to predict which will freeze first and why.
-
Observation Time:
After a set amount of time, check the trays together. Discuss what Robin sees. Is the water frozen? Does it look different based on the colors? This is a great time for Robin to share thoughts and observations.
Talking Points
- "What do you think will happen if we mix these two colors together?"
- "Why do you think hot water and cold water might freeze at different times?"
- "Look at that! What color did we create when we mixed yellow and blue?"
- "Can you see any differences in how the water looks before and after it freezes?"
- "What did you enjoy the most about our color and freezing experiment?"
