Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have expanded their English vocabulary by learning new words, using them in sentences, and engaging in fun activities that reinforce their understanding and usage.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen or pencil for writing.
  • Access to a dictionary or thesaurus (can be a physical book or online).
  • A list of 10 new vocabulary words (can be chosen from a book or online resource).
  • Space for creative activities (a table or desk).

Activities

  • Word Exploration: Begin by selecting 10 new vocabulary words. Look each word up in the dictionary to discover its definition, synonyms, and antonyms. Write this information in your notebook.

  • Sentence Creation: Choose 5 of the new words and create original sentences using each word. Try to make the sentences fun or silly to make it more enjoyable!

  • Vocabulary Game: Play a game where you describe one of the new words without saying the word itself. Have the student guess the word based on your description. This will help reinforce their memory and understanding of the vocabulary.

  • Artistic Expression: Draw a picture that represents one of the new vocabulary words. Label the picture with the word and a sentence using the word. This will help them visualize the meaning.

  • Word of the Day Journal: Start a journal where you write down a new vocabulary word each day along with its definition, a sentence, and a drawing. This will continue to expand their vocabulary over time.
