Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will learn basic Jiu-jitsu movements and concepts, such as how to roll, fall safely, and understand the importance of balance and control. The student will also have fun while getting some exercise!
Materials and Prep
- No special materials needed – just a soft area to practice, like a grassy yard or a carpeted room.
- Make sure the area is free of obstacles to ensure safety during movement.
- Wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement.
Activities
-
Warm-Up: Animal Movements
Start with a fun warm-up where the student imitates different animals. For example, crawl like a bear, hop like a frog, and slither like a snake. This will help get their body moving and ready for Jiu-jitsu.
-
Rolling Practice
Teach the student how to roll safely. Have them practice forward rolls and backward rolls on the soft surface. Explain how rolling helps them to move safely and avoid getting hurt during a fall.
-
Balance Challenge
Set up a balance challenge where the student stands on one foot and tries to hold their balance. You can make it fun by counting how long they can balance or by having them close their eyes!
-
Basic Positions
Introduce the student to basic Jiu-jitsu positions like guard and mount. Use simple explanations and let them try these positions with you as a partner. Focus on being gentle and having fun!
-
Cool Down: Stretching
End the lesson with some gentle stretching. Teach the student to stretch their arms, legs, and back. Explain how stretching helps their muscles feel better after exercise.
