Objective
By the end of this lesson, Lily will understand the basic structure and function of the lungs, how they help us breathe, and why it is important to keep our lungs healthy. She will also learn some fun facts about the respiratory system!
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Colored pencils or crayons
- Straws
- A balloon
- Timer (optional)
Before the lesson, make sure to explain to Lily what lungs are and their role in our body. You might want to familiarize yourself with the basic anatomy of the lungs and how breathing works.
Activities

Lung Drawing:
Lily will draw a picture of the lungs and label the parts. She can use colored pencils to make it colorful and fun!

Balloon Breathing:
Using a balloon, Lily will practice deep breathing. She can blow up the balloon and then let it go to see how air moves, which will help her understand how our lungs work.

Straw Breathing Race:
Lily can use a straw to blow bubbles in a bowl of water. This activity will show her how our lungs push air out and how important breath control is!

Fun Lung Facts:
At the end of the lesson, Lily can share three fun facts about lungs that she learned during the lesson with you or anyone else in the family!
