Objective

By the end of this lesson, Heidi will have a better understanding of military and defense systems in medieval Europe, including the types of armies, strategies used in warfare, and the impact of these systems on society and politics during that time. She will also engage in creative activities that will help her express her understanding of the topic.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes and writing activities
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, paper) for creative projects
  • Access to a quiet space for reading and writing
  • Prior knowledge of basic medieval history, including key events and figures

Activities

  • Timeline Creation:

Heidi will create a timeline of significant battles and military developments in medieval Europe. This will help her visualize the progression of military strategies and technologies over time.

  • Design Your Own Castle:

Using art supplies, Heidi will design her own medieval castle, incorporating defensive features such as moats, battlements, and arrow slits. She can explain her choices and how they relate to the defense systems of the time.

  • Role-Play a Battle:

Heidi will choose a famous battle from medieval history and role-play it, either solo or with a family member. She can act out the strategies used by both sides and discuss the outcome and its significance.

  • Write a Letter:

Heidi will write a letter from the perspective of a medieval soldier, describing life in the army, the challenges faced, and thoughts on the battle they are preparing for. This will help her understand the personal impact of military life.
