Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will learn how to make homemade ice cream using an ice cream maker. They will understand the basic ingredients, the process of making ice cream, and the fun of experimenting with different flavors!

Materials and Prep

  • Ice cream maker
  • Heavy cream (2 cups)
  • Whole milk (1 cup)
  • Sugar (3/4 cup)
  • Vanilla extract (1 tablespoon)
  • Mix-ins (chocolate chips, fruit, nuts, etc. - optional)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk or spoon for mixing

Before the lesson, make sure the ice cream maker is clean and ready to use. You may want to chill the mixing bowl in the freezer for a few minutes to help the ice cream freeze faster.

Activities

  • Mixing the Ingredients:

The student will combine the heavy cream, whole milk, sugar, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. They will whisk the ingredients together until the sugar is dissolved. This is a great opportunity to talk about how each ingredient contributes to the flavor and texture of the ice cream!

  • Chilling the Mixture:

The mixture will be placed in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to chill. During this time, the student can learn about why chilling the mixture is important for making smooth ice cream.

  • Using the Ice Cream Maker:

Once chilled, the mixture will be poured into the ice cream maker. The student will turn it on and watch the magic happen! They can discuss how the machine works and why it needs to churn the mixture.

  • Adding Mix-ins:

When the ice cream is almost ready, the student can add their favorite mix-ins, such as chocolate chips or fruit. This is a fun moment to talk about creativity in cooking and how flavors can be combined.

  • Tasting Time:

Finally, the student will scoop out their homemade ice cream and taste it! They can reflect on their experience and think about what they might want to try next time.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think will happen when we mix these ingredients together?"
  • "Why do you think we need to chill the mixture before we put it in the ice cream maker?"
  • "Can you guess how the ice cream maker works? What do you think it does to the mixture?"
  • "What mix-ins do you think would taste good? Let's be creative!"
  • "How does it feel to make something from scratch? What was your favorite part?"
