Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of gardening, including how to plant seeds, care for plants, and the importance of sunlight and water for plant growth.
Materials and Prep
- Seeds (any type you have available, like beans or flowers)
- Soil (from the garden or a pot)
- A small container or a garden bed for planting
- Water
- Sunlight (a sunny spot in your yard or window)
Before the lesson, make sure to choose a sunny spot where the student can plant their seeds. Discuss with them the importance of sunlight and water for plants.
Activities
-
Seed Planting
Start by showing the student how to plant the seeds in the soil. Let them dig small holes with their fingers and place the seeds inside. Cover the seeds with soil and gently pat it down.
-
Watering Can Fun
After planting, let the student use a cup or a small container to water the seeds. Explain how plants need water to grow and how too much water can be bad.
-
Sunshine Dance
Have a little dance party in the sunny spot where the plants will grow! Talk about how plants love the sun and how they use sunlight to make their food.
-
Garden Journal
Create a simple garden journal where the student can draw pictures of the seeds they planted and write (or dictate) what they learned about taking care of plants.
Talking Points
- "What do you think will happen to our seeds when we plant them?"
- "Why do you think plants need water? Can you think of a time when you were thirsty?"
- "Look at the sun! Why do you think plants need sunlight? Can you feel how warm it is?"
- "How do you think our plants will look in a week? Let's imagine together!"
- "What do you want to draw in our garden journal? Let's make it colorful!"
- "Gardening is like magic! We put tiny seeds in the soil, and with water and sun, they can grow into big plants!"
