Objective

By the end of this lesson, L will learn about different types of mushrooms, their characteristics, and how to express their beauty through various art mediums. L will create unique mushroom art pieces that reflect their understanding and appreciation of these fascinating fungi.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper (any kind will do)
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • Watercolor paints (if available)
  • Natural materials (like leaves or twigs) for collage
  • Reference images of different mushrooms (printed or digital)
  • Optional: A camera or smartphone to take pictures of mushrooms outside

Before starting the lesson, gather reference images of mushrooms from books or the internet. If possible, take a short walk outside to look for real mushrooms to inspire the artwork.

Activities

  • Mushroom Exploration: Begin with a short nature walk to observe mushrooms in their natural habitat. Discuss different types, colors, and shapes of mushrooms found along the way. This will help L connect with the subject matter.

  • Artistic Sketching: After the exploration, have L pick their favorite mushroom and create a detailed sketch using colored pencils or crayons. Encourage them to focus on the unique features of the mushroom, such as its cap, gills, and stem.

  • Watercolor Painting: Using the sketch as a guide, L can create a watercolor painting of their chosen mushroom. Discuss the importance of colors and how they can represent the natural look of mushrooms.

  • Nature Collage: Using natural materials collected during the walk, L can create a collage that incorporates their mushroom artwork. This can include leaves, twigs, and any other interesting textures they find.

Talking Points

  • "Mushrooms come in many shapes, sizes, and colors. Did you know there are over 10,000 types of mushrooms?"
  • "Some mushrooms are edible, while others can be very poisonous. It's important to know which ones are safe!"
  • "Mushrooms play a crucial role in nature. They break down dead material and help plants grow!"
  • "Art allows us to express what we see in nature. How can you show the beauty of mushrooms in your artwork?"
  • "Using different mediums, like watercolor and collage, can change how we feel about the same subject. What do you think looks best?"
