Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will have explored artistic expression, practiced writing and reading skills, engaged in basic math concepts, and learned about scientific properties, all while having fun playing with shaving cream!
Materials and Prep
- Shaving cream
- Large tray or table cover (to contain the mess)
- Paper towels (for cleanup)
- Optional: a small container for water (to rinse hands)
Before starting, ensure the workspace is covered to protect surfaces and that the student understands the importance of cleaning up afterward.
Activities
-
Art Exploration:
Spread a generous amount of shaving cream on the tray or table. Let the student use their fingers to create different shapes, patterns, or even drawings. Encourage them to make swirls, lines, and textures!
-
Word Play:
Once the shaving cream is spread out, ask the student to write their name or simple words (like "cat" or "dog") using their fingers. This activity helps with letter recognition and spelling.
-
Math Fun:
Use the shaving cream to create numbers or simple math problems. For example, write "2 + 3 =" and have the student solve it by writing the answer in the cream.
-
Science Discovery:
Discuss the properties of shaving cream. Ask the student to describe how it feels, smells, and looks. You can also talk about why it’s fluffy and how air is trapped inside it!
Talking Points
- "What do you think will happen when you touch the shaving cream? How does it feel?"
- "Can you draw a picture with your finger? What shapes can you make?"
- "Let's write your name in the cream! Can you say the letters as you write them?"
- "How many fingers do you have? Can you show me that number in the cream?"
- "What happens if we press down on the shaving cream? Does it change?"
- "What color is the shaving cream? Does it smell nice? What do you think it’s made of?"
- "Can you make a number with the shaving cream? What number will you make?"
