Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jaspen will have a better understanding of Viking culture, their historical significance, and how they contributed to various fields such as language, mathematics, music, and science. Jaspen will also learn some useful phrases in a foreign language related to the Vikings.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen/pencil for notes
  • Access to a computer or device for research (if available)
  • A calendar for math activities
  • Art supplies for music and science activities (colored pencils, paper, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge of Viking history (time period, key figures, and cultural practices)

Activities

  • Viking Vocabulary Challenge: Create a list of 10 Viking-related words (e.g., longship, Norse, raid, etc.) and their meanings. Then, use each word in a sentence to understand its context better.

  • Viking Math Adventure: Calculate the number of days it would take for a Viking ship to travel from Norway to England, given a speed of 5 knots. Use a map to find the distance and practice basic math skills by converting nautical miles to kilometers.

  • Compose a Viking Song: Write a short song or poem about a Viking adventure. Use traditional Norse themes and incorporate rhythm and rhyme to make it musical. You can even try to sing it!

  • Science of Shipbuilding: Research the materials Vikings used to build their ships. Then, create a simple model of a Viking ship using paper or other available materials, discussing the science behind buoyancy and design.

  • Social Studies Discussion: Have a discussion about the impact of Viking raids on European societies. Write down your thoughts and analyze how these events shaped modern Europe.
