Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jaspen will have a deeper understanding of Viking culture, including their language, mythology, and daily life. He will also improve his English language skills through creative writing and discussion activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen/pencil
  • Access to a computer or tablet (optional for research)
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, or crayons)
  • Printed images or illustrations of Viking ships, gods, and daily life (optional)
  • Basic knowledge about Viking history (e.g., they were seafaring Norse people from Scandinavia)

Activities

  • Viking Vocabulary Challenge:

Jaspen will create a list of 10 Viking-related words (like "longship," "fjord," and "Valhalla") and write their definitions. This will help him expand his vocabulary while learning about Viking culture.

  • Creative Writing - A Day in the Life:

Jaspen will write a short story from the perspective of a Viking teenager. He can describe a typical day, including chores, adventures, and interactions with family and friends. This will enhance his creative writing skills.

  • Viking Mythology Exploration:

Jaspen will research one Viking god or goddess (like Thor or Freyja) and prepare a short presentation. He can illustrate his findings and share them with you, which will improve his research and presentation skills.

  • Viking Art Project:

Using art supplies, Jaspen will create a Viking shield design, incorporating symbols that represent bravery, strength, or his favorite Viking story. This activity will allow him to express his creativity while learning about Viking symbolism.
