Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jeremahli will be able to identify and draw at least three different constellations, understand what constellations are, and explain why they are important in astronomy.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Black crayon or marker
  • White or yellow crayon (for stars)
  • A comfortable place to sit and draw

Before the lesson, make sure to find a quiet area where Jeremahli can focus on drawing and learning about constellations. You might also want to have a few examples of constellations ready to show him.

Activities

  • Constellation Story Time: Begin by telling Jeremahli a short story about a few famous constellations, like Orion or Ursa Major. Explain how these constellations got their names and what they represent in mythology.

  • Star Mapping: Have Jeremahli look at a simple star map or picture of constellations. Then, encourage him to pick his favorite constellation and try to draw it on his paper using his black crayon.

  • Create Your Own Constellation: After drawing a real constellation, ask Jeremahli to use his imagination and create his own constellation. He can draw it and come up with a fun name and story for it!

  • Starry Night Art: Once he has his constellations drawn, Jeremahli can use the white or yellow crayon to add stars around his constellations, creating a beautiful starry night scene.

Talking Points

  • "Do you know what constellations are? They are groups of stars that make pictures in the sky!"
  • "Can you think of a story or a character that might be in the sky? Many constellations have stories behind them!"
  • "Look at this constellation! It’s called Orion. Can you see the shape of a hunter in it?"
  • "What if you could make your own constellation? What would it look like and what would you name it?"
  • "When we look up at the stars, we can find constellations that people have known about for thousands of years!"
  • "Drawing constellations helps us remember them. Let's make a starry night together!"
