Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will have a greater understanding of important figures and events in Black history through a fun and interactive game of bingo. The student will learn to recognize key contributions and achievements, fostering an appreciation for diversity and history.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencils
- Markers or crayons
- Printed bingo cards with Black history figures and events
- List of clues or descriptions for each bingo square
- Space to play (a table or a large area on the floor)
Before the lesson, prepare bingo cards with images or names of important Black historical figures and events. Create a list of clues or descriptions that correspond to each square on the bingo cards.
Activities
-
Bingo Game: Play a game of Black History Bingo where the student marks off squares based on clues given. For example, if the clue is "This woman refused to give up her bus seat," the student would mark "Rosa Parks." This helps reinforce their knowledge while having fun!
-
Research and Create: After playing bingo, have the student choose one figure from their bingo card to research. They can create a mini-poster with information about that person’s life and contributions to history.
-
Story Time: Read a short story or biography about one of the figures from the bingo game together. Discuss what makes that person special and how they changed the world.
