Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic principles of physics and balance while playing Jenga. They will also develop strategic thinking skills and learn to work on their patience and focus as they play the game.

Materials and Prep

  • Jenga game set (or homemade Jenga blocks using cardboard or wood)
  • A flat and stable surface to play on
  • Optional: A timer or stopwatch for timed challenges

Before starting the lesson, ensure that the playing area is clear of any distractions and that the Jenga blocks are in good condition. Familiarize yourself with the basic rules of Jenga if you haven't already.

Activities

  • Jenga Basics: Begin by explaining the rules of Jenga. Take turns removing one block at a time from the tower and placing it on top. The goal is to keep the tower standing while making it more challenging with each turn.
  • Physics Exploration: Discuss why some blocks are easier to remove than others. Ask questions like, "What happens when the tower gets taller?" or "Why do some blocks seem to make the tower wobble more?"
  • Timed Challenge: Set a timer and see how many blocks can be removed and stacked in one minute. This will encourage quick thinking and decision-making.
  • Creative Jenga: Challenge the student to build a unique tower using the blocks, then try to remove blocks from their own creation without it falling down!

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes the tower stay up? Is it the way the blocks are stacked?"
  • "Can you feel how the tower gets wobbly when you take a block from the bottom? Why do you think that happens?"
  • "How do you decide which block to take? Do you have a strategy?"
  • "What happens if you rush to take a block? Can you think of a time when being patient helped you?"
  • "Let’s think about balance. How can we make sure our tower stays balanced as we play?"
