Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify different materials, understand their properties, and explore how they can be used in fun and creative ways.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Plastic bottles
- Cardboard boxes
- Fabric scraps
- Old magazines
- Glue or tape
- Scissors (with adult supervision)
- Markers or crayons
Before the lesson, gather all the materials in one place. Make sure the scissors are safe for little hands, and be ready to help with cutting if needed.
Activities
-
Material Scavenger Hunt
Go on a scavenger hunt around the house or yard to find items made from different materials. Ask the student to find something made of paper, plastic, fabric, and metal.
-
Material Sorting Game
Set up a sorting station where the student can categorize the items they found during the scavenger hunt into groups based on their materials (e.g., paper, plastic, fabric).
-
Creative Collage
Using old magazines, fabric scraps, and paper, the student can create a colorful collage. Encourage them to talk about the materials they used and why they chose them.
-
Build a Structure
Using cardboard boxes and plastic bottles, the student can build a fun structure. They can use glue or tape to hold their creation together and decorate it with markers or crayons.
Talking Points
- "What do you think this material feels like? Is it soft, hard, or bumpy?"
- "Can you tell me what this item is made of? Is it paper, plastic, or something else?"
- "Why do you think we use this material? What can we do with it?"
- "Look at your collage! What materials did you use? How do they look together?"
- "What did you build with the boxes? Can you tell me about your structure?"
