Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will learn about different careers by exploring the roles of astronauts, police officers, firefighters, and doctors through imaginative play and costume role-playing.
Materials and Prep
- Astronaut costume (can be made with a white shirt and silver accessories)
- Police costume (can be made with a blue shirt and a toy badge)
- Firefighter costume (can be made with a red shirt and a toy helmet)
- Doctor costume (can be made with a white shirt and a toy stethoscope)
Before the lesson, make sure to have all the costumes ready and set up a space where the student can play and act out each career. Explain that they will be pretending to be different professionals today!
Activities
- Costume Dress-Up: Let the student choose one of the four costumes to wear. As they dress up, talk about what that person does for their job.
- Role-Playing Scenarios: Create simple scenarios for each career. For example, if they are a firefighter, pretend there’s a fire and they need to help. If they are a doctor, pretend to check a patient’s heartbeat.
- Career Story Time: Read a short story or make up a fun story about someone in the chosen career. Discuss what makes that job special.
- Artistic Expression: Draw a picture of themselves in their costume and what they would do in that job. Ask them what they like most about that career.
Talking Points
- "What do you think an astronaut does? They fly in space and explore new places!"
- "Police officers help keep us safe. Can you think of a time when you felt safe because of a police officer?"
- "Firefighters are heroes! They put out fires and help people. What would you do if you saw a fire?"
- "Doctors help us feel better when we are sick. Can you tell me what you think a doctor does?"
- "Which job do you think is the coolest? Why do you like that job?"
