By the end of this lesson, the student will learn how to make baked sourdough discard blueberry muffins while integrating concepts from art, English, history, math, physical education, science, and social studies. The student will gain practical baking skills and understand the importance of each subject in the context of cooking.

Materials and Prep

  • Sourdough discard (1 cup)
  • All-purpose flour (1.5 cups)
  • Granulated sugar (0.5 cups)
  • Baking powder (1 tsp)

Guide the student through the process of mixing the ingredients to create the muffin batter. Discuss the importance of measuring ingredients accurately.

  • Creative Muffin Toppers

Let the student decorate the muffin tops with extra blueberries or a sprinkle of sugar before baking. This is a fun way to express creativity!

  • Story Time

While the muffins are baking, read a short story or a fun fact about blueberries, such as their history or health benefits.

  • Math in Baking

Have the student calculate how many muffins can be made with different amounts of sourdough discard, or convert the recipe to make a different quantity.

  • Physical Activity
