Objective

By the end of this lesson, Ella will be able to identify and use basic math concepts such as addition and subtraction, as well as recognize and utilize simple literacy skills through engaging activities inspired by her favorite Minions videos.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencils
  • Markers or crayons
  • Access to a Minions video (for inspiration)
  • Printed or handwritten Minions-themed math problems
  • Minions-themed story or book (optional)

Before the lesson, ensure that Ella has watched a Minions video to get her excited about the activities. Prepare some fun Minions-themed math problems and a short story or activity related to the Minions to use as examples.

Activities

  1. Minion Math Challenge:

Create a series of math problems featuring Minions. For example, "If Bob the Minion has 3 bananas and Kevin gives him 2 more, how many bananas does Bob have now?" Ella will solve these problems and draw her favorite Minion next to each problem.

  2. Minions Word Hunt:

Write down a list of simple words related to Minions (like "banana," "fun," "Kevin," etc.). Ella will search for these words in a short Minions-themed story or create her own sentences using these words.

  3. Draw and Write:

Ask Ella to draw her favorite Minion and write a short story or a few sentences about what the Minion is doing. This combines her drawing skills with literacy and allows for creativity.

Talking Points

  • "Math is everywhere, even in the Minion world! Can you think of how they might use numbers?"
  • "When we add or subtract, we are solving problems, just like the Minions do when they share bananas!"
  • "Reading helps us understand stories better. How do you think the Minions feel when they go on adventures?"
  • "Writing your own story lets you be the creator! What would your Minion do if they found a treasure?"
  • "Drawing is a great way to express your ideas! What do you love most about the Minions?"
  • "Every time you solve a math problem, you’re using your brain like a Minion using a gadget!"
  • "Words can be fun! Let’s see how many Minion-related words you can come up with!"
  • "Think about teamwork! The Minions always work together, just like we’re working together on this lesson."
  • "Can you think of a time when you needed to use math in real life, like when you’re cooking or shopping?"
  • "Stories can teach us lessons. What do you think the Minions teach us about friendship?"
  • "Creativity is key! The more you practice writing and drawing, the better you get, just like the Minions with their inventions!"
  • "Let’s celebrate your hard work! What was your favorite part of today’s lesson?"
