Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a deeper understanding of the evolution of art throughout history, recognizing key movements, influential artists, and the socio-political contexts that shaped their work. The student will also create a personal art project inspired by a historical art movement of their choice.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)
  • Art supplies (paper, paint, colored pencils, etc.) for the personal art project
  • A list of major art movements and artists (can be created beforehand)
  • Some background knowledge of different art periods (Renaissance, Baroque, Impressionism, etc.)

Activities

  • Art Movement Exploration: The student will choose one major art movement to research. They will look for key artists, their notable works, and the historical context of the movement. This can be presented in a short summary or a visual poster.

  • Gallery Walk: Create a mini-gallery at home by displaying prints or images of artworks from the chosen art movement. The student can write short descriptions or critiques for each piece, explaining why they chose them and what they represent.

  • Personal Art Project: Inspired by the art movement studied, the student will create their own artwork. This could be a painting, drawing, or mixed media piece that reflects the style or themes of the movement.

  • Art Discussion: Engage in a discussion about the influence of art on society and vice versa. The student can share their thoughts on how the historical context of an art movement shapes its themes and techniques.

Talking Points

  • "Art movements often reflect the social, political, and cultural changes of their time. Can you think of any modern examples?"
  • "Why do you think certain artists become iconic? Is it just their talent, or is it also about the context in which they created their work?"
  • "Consider how technology has influenced art throughout history. How do you think today's digital age compares to past movements?"
  • "As you create your artwork, think about how you can incorporate themes or techniques from the movement you studied. What message do you want your art to convey?"
  • "Discuss how art can challenge societal norms. Have there been artists who have used their work to comment on important issues?"
