Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a better understanding of Simon van der Stel's life, his contributions to South Africa, and his role in the development of the Cape Colony. The student will also engage in creative activities to reinforce their learning.

Materials and Prep

  • Access to a comfortable space for reading and activities
  • A timer or clock for activity management

  • Knowledge of Simon van der Stel's basic biography (born in 1639, died in 1712, and was a governor of the Cape Colony)

  • Biography Exploration:

    Start with a brief reading about Simon van der Stel's life. The student can summarize key points on paper, focusing on his early life, career, and legacy.

  • Creative Drawing:

    Have the student draw a scene depicting a significant moment in van der Stel's life, such as his founding of Stellenbosch or his work in agriculture. Encourage them to use their imagination!

  • Role-Playing Game:

    Set up a role-playing scenario where the student pretends to be Simon van der Stel. They can create a dialogue about his experiences and decisions while governing the Cape Colony.

  • Map Making:

    Have the student create a simple map of the Cape Colony during van der Stel's time, marking important locations such as farms, towns, and natural resources he influenced.
