Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have enhanced their coloring skills, learned about color theory, and created a beautiful piece of artwork that reflects their personality and creativity.

Materials and Prep

  • Coloring books or printable coloring pages
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • A clean, flat workspace
  • Paper towels or a cloth for cleaning hands if needed
  • Optional: A mirror to observe colors in nature or their own surroundings

Before the lesson, ensure that the coloring materials are sharpened (if using colored pencils) and that the workspace is clear of distractions. Familiarize yourself with basic color theory concepts to share with the student.

Activities

  • Color Exploration:

The student will start by experimenting with different colors on a blank piece of paper. Encourage them to mix colors and see what new shades they can create.

  • Coloring Challenge:

Choose a coloring page and set a timer for 20 minutes. The student will color as much as they can within the time limit, focusing on staying within the lines and using a variety of colors.

  • Nature Color Hunt:

Take a short walk outside (if possible) and ask the student to find objects in nature that match the colors they are using. They can collect leaves or small flowers to inspire their coloring.

  • Color Theory Discussion:

Introduce the student to primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. Discuss how colors can evoke emotions and how they can use this in their coloring.

Talking Points

  • "What colors do you feel represent your personality? Let's use those in our artwork!"
  • "Did you know that mixing red and blue makes purple? Let's try creating some secondary colors!"
  • "How does this color make you feel? Colors can really change our mood!"
  • "Look at the world around you; what colors do you see? Nature has a beautiful palette!"
