Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a deeper understanding of the ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) history, the significance of the ANZAC Memorial in Hyde Park, Sydney, and how these relate to broader themes in Australian history, including the impact of war on society, uniforms and weapons used, and geographical factors influencing military actions.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for note-taking
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research
  • Map of Australia highlighting key geographical areas relevant to ANZAC history
  • Printouts or digital resources about WWI and WWII, focusing on ANZAC involvement
  • Visual aids or images of uniforms and weapons used by ANZAC soldiers

Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with the key events of the ANZAC campaigns, particularly Gallipoli, and the significance of the ANZAC Day commemoration. Review the NSW History outcomes for Year 9 and Year 10 to align the lesson with curriculum standards.
