Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to prepare a simple and delicious dish, understand basic cooking techniques, and gain confidence in their cooking skills. They will also learn about the importance of kitchen safety and hygiene, as well as the joy of creating a meal from scratch.

Materials and Prep

  • A cutting board
  • A sharp knife (with supervision)
  • A wooden spoon or spatula
  • Ingredients for a simple recipe (e.g., pasta, vegetables, and a protein like chicken or tofu)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Salt and pepper
  • Paper towels for cleaning

Before starting the lesson, ensure that the cooking area is clean and that the student understands basic kitchen safety rules, such as handling knives carefully and not touching hot surfaces.

Activities

  • Recipe Selection:

The student will choose a simple recipe they would like to make. This could be anything from pasta with vegetables to a stir-fry. Encourage them to think about what ingredients they enjoy and how they can combine them.

  • Preparation and Cooking:

Once the recipe is selected, the student will gather all the ingredients and tools needed. They will then follow the recipe step by step, learning how to chop, sauté, and season their dish.

  • Presentation:

After cooking, the student will plate their dish nicely. They can add garnishes or arrange the food in an appealing way. This activity teaches them about the importance of presentation in cooking.

  • Taste Test:

The student will taste their creation and reflect on the flavors. They can think about what they like or what they might change next time. This encourages critical thinking and creativity in cooking.
