Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the importance of walking as a form of exercise, learn how to set walking goals, and engage in fun activities that promote walking as a healthy habit.

Materials and Prep

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Water bottle
  • Notebook and pen (optional for notes)
  • Sunscreen (if walking outdoors)
  • Knowledge of local walking paths or parks

Before starting the lesson, ensure the student is dressed comfortably for walking and has a safe route planned out. Discuss the weather and prepare accordingly.

Activities

  • Nature Walk:

Take a walk in a nearby park or nature trail. Encourage the student to observe the different plants, animals, and sounds they encounter. Discuss what they see and hear during the walk.

  • Walking Challenge:

Set a walking challenge for the day. This could be a certain number of steps or a specific distance to cover. Use a phone app or step counter if available, or simply count the steps together.

  • Story Walk:

While walking, create a story together. Each person takes turns adding a sentence to the story as you walk. This keeps the mind engaged and makes walking fun!

  • Walking Journal:

After the walk, have the student write a short journal entry about their experience. They can include what they saw, how they felt, and any interesting conversations they had during the walk.
