Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand what bats are, how they use echolocation to navigate, and learn about the important work of scientist Rodrigo Medellin in bat conservation.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • A quiet space to listen and think
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)

Before the lesson, it might be helpful to read a short article or watch a video about bats and echolocation to get familiar with the topic.

Activities

  • Bats and Echolocation Drawing:

The student will draw a bat and illustrate how echolocation works. They can use arrows to show sound waves bouncing off objects and returning to the bat.

  • Sound Experiment:

The student will close their eyes and try to identify different sounds around them. This will help them understand how bats use sound to "see" in the dark.

  • Research Rodrigo Medellin:

The student will learn about Rodrigo Medellin and his work to protect bats. They can create a mini-poster showcasing fun facts about him and his contributions to bat conservation.

  • Bats in Nature Storytime:

The student will create a short story about a bat using echolocation to find food. They can illustrate the story with drawings.
