Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic steps of doing laundry, including sorting clothes, using the washing machine, and folding clean laundry. The student will also learn the importance of keeping clothes clean and organized.

Materials and Prep

  • Dirty laundry (clothes that need washing)
  • Washing machine (or a designated area for pretend play)
  • Dryer (or a place to hang clothes to dry)
  • Laundry basket
  • Labels or markers for sorting (optional)

Before the lesson, make sure to gather some dirty clothes and set up a safe area where the student can pretend to use the washing machine and dryer if they cannot be used for real.

Activities

  • Sorting the Laundry:

    Start by having the student sort the dirty laundry into different piles. They can sort by color (lights and darks), type (shirts, pants, socks), or fabric type (cotton, wool). This will help them understand how to organize clothes before washing.

  • Understanding the Washing Machine:

    Explain how a washing machine works. If you have a real one, show them the buttons and settings. If not, use a pretend model to demonstrate. Let them press the buttons (if safe) and talk about what each setting does.

  • Folding the Clothes:

    After the "laundry" is done, have the student practice folding the clean clothes. Teach them how to fold shirts, pants, and socks neatly. This can be a fun way to end the lesson and keep their space organized!
